Rapid progress is being made at Vopak’s new terminal in Darwin, Australia. Foundations have been completed and civil works are well advanced.
Tank foundations are extra strong due to the risk of cyclones (like hurricanes in the Northern Hemisphere but they spin in the opposite direction). Tanks are rising quickly - the first tank has reached full height in mid July.
The long dock lines (2.5 km) are being supplied by the Port Authority - construction will be starting soon.
The photo taken in late June shows the famous Ghan train in the background. It is 1.2 km long and is the longest north south rail journey in the world, crossing from the tropical Timor Sea to the Great Southern Ocean.
The new northern Australian Vopak terminal will be operational in 2005.
